What is Sustainable Art?
The Water Woman Art Challenge: There has never been as lofty a goal put to a group of artists, but there hasn’t been a reason until now. As a community of concerned Eco-Artists our goal is to set new standards in sustainable art forms to include art that provides energy, provides food, provides shelter and supports water systems.
By bringing together artists, permaculturalists, natural builders and technology providers; our goal is to go beyond our society’s definitions of sustainability and beauty!
Inspire the Future with your Art + Eco-Design in Balance with the Patterns of Nature!
Sustainable art includes: Art & Eco Designs created out of safely re-purposed materials, Art that is Multi-Functional, is Beneficial and Beautiful, creates more energy than it took to make, and is built with a minimum carbon footprint. The art of creating more energy over time than it took to make the art. It’s great to have this art form do more than one thing. The best material is salvaged instead of a shelf item. Make it last and think in terms of a problem becomes the solution. Something created with both an ecological AND aesthetic purpose in mind. Not just utilitarian but beautiful, long-lasting, preferably recycled
Examples:
• Giant slip-n-slide that waters the plants as you slide down 100 feet on a salvaged billboard. It also gets the people up the hill with something that needs to be up the hill.
• A chicken tractor made so beautiful it’s art, but also fertilizes the garden, the chickens eat all the bugs, pull the weeds, and then lays eggs.
• The solar shower can be made of old parts and scrap that can provide water for a garden.
• The bicycle is the best invention, so create one that solves needs, but make it beautiful.
• Performance can educate in a wonderful way instead of just entertain.
